About Kinara

Kinara developed discrete neural processing units, separate AI chips that sit beside a main processor and handle inference for edge devices. Its Ara-2 is a second-generation part rated at up to 40 TOPS and aimed at generative AI, vision-language models and similar workloads. It connects over PCIe or USB. NXP Semiconductors completed its acquisition of Kinara on 27 October 2025 for $307 million in cash before closing adjustments, and the Ara products now form part of NXP's edge AI portfolio.

Kinara was founded in 2013 and is based in San Jose, CA, United States. It is listed under Edge Computing, AI Accelerators. Reported funding is $307M all-cash acquisition by NXP (closed Oct 27, 2025).

What Kinara works on

Edge Computing

Edge computing means processing data close to where it is produced, on a device or a nearby server, instead of sending everything to a distant cloud data center. In chip terms, edge processors are small, low-power chips that run software and AI models inside phones, cameras, cars and sensors.
