About SEMRON

SEMRON is a German start-up developing chips for running AI models on small devices such as phones and headsets. Its approach, called CapRAM, uses memcapacitors, which are components that store a neural network weight as an electric charge level and compute with electric fields instead of continuous current. The company says this can cut energy use, though the efficiency figures are its own claims. SEMRON is based in Dresden and announced a seed round of 7.3 million euros led by Join Capital in January 2024.

SEMRON was founded in 2020 and is based in Dresden, Germany. It is listed under AI Accelerators, Analog Computing, Neuromorphic Computing.

What SEMRON works on

AI Accelerators

An AI accelerator is a chip, or a part of a chip, designed to run machine learning faster or with less energy than a general-purpose processor. The category includes GPUs, TPUs, neural processing units (NPUs) and chips from many startups.

Analog Computing

Analog computing represents numbers as continuous physical quantities, such as voltage or current, rather than as strings of 0s and 1s. The physics of the circuit does the calculation. For example, Ohm's law and Kirchhoff's current law let a grid of resistors multiply and add numbers at once.

Neuromorphic Computing

Neuromorphic computing builds chips that copy some features of the brain. Instead of a central processor and separate memory, a neuromorphic chip has many small units that act like neurons, each with its own local memory, joined by connections that act like synapses.
