About Untether AI

Untether AI, based in Toronto, designed AI inference chips built around at-memory computation, which places small processing elements right beside memory cells so less energy is spent moving data. Its speedAI line was aimed at data-centre and edge inference. The company shut down in June 2025. AMD hired part of its engineering team but did not acquire the chips or the software development kit, which are no longer supported.

Untether AI was founded in 2018 and is based in Toronto, Canada. It is listed under In-Memory Computing, AI Accelerators.

What Untether AI works on

In-Memory Computing

In-memory computing does calculations inside or right next to the memory that stores the data, instead of copying the data to a separate processor. It is also called processing-in-memory (PIM) or compute-in-memory.

AI Accelerators

An AI accelerator is a chip, or a part of a chip, designed to run machine learning faster or with less energy than a general-purpose processor. The category includes GPUs, TPUs, neural processing units (NPUs) and chips from many startups.
