About AWS Graviton

AWS Graviton is a family of server processors that Amazon Web Services designs for its own cloud. They use the Arm instruction set rather than x86, and each virtual CPU maps to a full physical core instead of a shared thread. The first generation arrived in November 2018 in EC2 A1 instances, and later generations moved to Arm Neoverse cores, with Graviton4 announced in November 2023. Design is done by Annapurna Labs, a chip design team that Amazon acquired in 2015. AWS is part of Amazon and is based in Seattle.

AWS Graviton was founded in 2018 and is based in Seattle, WA, United States. It is listed under Custom Silicon, CPUs & RISC-V.

What AWS Graviton works on

Custom Silicon

Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.

CPUs & RISC-V

A CPU, or central processing unit, is the general-purpose chip that runs a computer. It reads instructions, does arithmetic and logic, and decides what happens next. Every phone, laptop and server has at least one.
