About Covesion

Southampton maker of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals, waveguides and modulators for photon-pair generation, quantum frequency conversion and laser systems; a University of Southampton spin-out incorporated on 9 August 2007 and now Hawthorn Photonics (UK) Ltd. AdvR Inc. of Bozeman, Montana joined it under the Hawthorn Photonics group in an announcement of 5 June 2025, and AdvR products are now sold under the Covesion brand. Covesion added a second site at Southampton Science Park in November 2025, announced a 616 to 637 nm tunable laser on 9 January 2026, lists ORCA Computing among its partner logos, and exhibits at the UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase on 6 November 2026.

Covesion was founded in 2007 and is based in Southampton, United Kingdom. It is listed under Quantum Computing, Photonic Computing.

What Covesion works on

Quantum Computing

A quantum computer is a machine that uses the rules of quantum physics to process information. Its basic unit is the qubit. A classical bit is either 0 or 1. A qubit can be in a superposition, a state that combines both, and its measured result is probabilistic.

Photonic Computing

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.
