About Mbryonics

Mbryonics makes optical communications hardware for satellites, in which laser links carry data between spacecraft and to the ground rather than radio. Its Starcom terminals are lightweight and power-efficient units for inter-satellite and Earth links. The range also includes the STARGATE optical ground station, STARLIGHT digital optical modems and TeraBIX, a radiation-hardened silicon photonic transceiver. The company has an Irish phone number and lists the European Space Agency, Intel and Viasat among the logos on its site, though it does not describe those relationships. Its website describes a vision of building the internet in space.

Mbryonics was founded in 2014 and is based in Galway, Ireland. It is listed under Photonic Computing. Reported funding is €17.5M EIC.

What Mbryonics works on

Photonic Computing

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.
