About Oriole Networks
Oriole Networks makes optical networking equipment for AI data centres. Its PRISM system replaces layers of electrical packet switches with optical circuit switches that redirect beams of light and can reconfigure in about 100 nanoseconds, which the company says lowers the power and delay of linking many GPUs. The technology comes from research by Professor George Zervas at University College London, and the company licenses it through UCL's technology transfer arm, UCLB. Oriole was founded in 2023, is based in London and is led by chief executive James Regan.
Oriole Networks was founded in 2023 and is based in London, UK, United Kingdom. It is listed under Photonic Computing, Interconnect & Networking. Reported funding is $35M total (Seed + $22M Series A 2024, Plural-led).

What Oriole Networks works on
Photonic Computing
Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.
Interconnect & Networking
Interconnect is the set of links that move data between chips, between boards and between racks. It includes wires on a package, cables inside a server, and the network switches and optical fibre across a data center. A processor is only as useful as the speed at which it can get data in and out.
