About Thunder Compute

Thunder Compute rents GPU capacity using a technique it calls GPU over TCP. Instead of attaching a GPU directly to a server, a software layer intercepts CUDA calls, which are the instructions programs send to Nvidia GPUs, and forwards them over the network to a machine that holds the physical card. This lets several users share one GPU and lets developers use GPUs from ordinary CPU-only instances. The company says network transport is slower than a direct PCIe connection and that support for some CUDA libraries is still limited. It was founded by Carl Peterson and Brian Model and joined Y Combinator in the Summer 2024 batch.

Thunder Compute was founded in 2024 and is based in Atlanta, GA, United States. It is listed under AI Accelerators. Reported funding is YC S24.

What Thunder Compute works on

AI Accelerators

An AI accelerator is a chip, or a part of a chip, designed to run machine learning faster or with less energy than a general-purpose processor. The category includes GPUs, TPUs, neural processing units (NPUs) and chips from many startups.
