About Aledia

Aledia makes microLED displays, in which each pixel is a very small LED, using gallium nitride nanowires grown upright on large silicon wafers. Standard LEDs are flat layers grown on sapphire or similar wafers, so building on silicon lets Aledia use semiconductor factory tools designed for larger wafers. In 2020 it announced microLED chips made on 300 millimetre silicon wafers. Aledia spun out of the French research institute CEA-Leti, around 2011 or 2012 according to different sources, and is based in Grenoble, France. It is not a processor company, so its fit in this directory is marginal.

Aledia was founded in 2011 and is based in Grenoble, France. It is listed under ASICs. Reported funding is $600M.

ASICs

An ASIC, or application-specific integrated circuit, is a chip designed to do one job or a narrow set of jobs. Its circuits are fixed when the chip is made. A CPU can run any program; an ASIC does what it was designed for and nothing else.
