About Microchip Technology
Microchip Technology makes microcontrollers, which are small self-contained processors used to run embedded systems such as appliances, vehicles and industrial machines. Its best-known lines are PIC and AVR. It also sells analog, power management, memory, wireless and timing chips, plus development tools. General Instrument spun off its microelectronics division in 1989 to create the company, which is based in Chandler, Arizona. Microchip is listed on Nasdaq and grew through acquisitions including Atmel in 2016 and Microsemi in 2018.
Microchip Technology was founded in 1989 and is based in Chandler, AZ, United States. It is listed under Custom Silicon, FPGAs, CPUs & RISC-V. Its shares trade as MCHP on NASDAQ.

What Microchip Technology works on
Custom Silicon
Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.
FPGAs
An FPGA, or field-programmable gate array, is a chip whose internal wiring can be changed after it is made. It contains a grid of small logic blocks, memory blocks and programmable connections. Loading a new configuration file, called a bitstream, turns it into a different digital circuit.
CPUs & RISC-V
A CPU, or central processing unit, is the general-purpose chip that runs a computer. It reads instructions, does arithmetic and logic, and decides what happens next. Every phone, laptop and server has at least one.
