About Altium

Altium makes software that engineers use to design printed circuit boards, the boards that connect chips and other components inside electronic devices. Its products include Altium Designer and the cloud platform Altium 365, which let teams lay out circuits, manage parts and share designs. It sells tools rather than hardware, so it sits upstream of the compute industry. Altium began in 1985 as Protel Systems in Australia and is now headquartered in the San Diego area. Renesas Electronics completed its acquisition in August 2024, and Altium is now a Renesas subsidiary.

Altium was founded in 1985 and is based in San Diego, California, United States. It is listed under Custom Silicon.

Custom Silicon

Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.
