Coherent Corp. was known as II-VI Incorporated until it took the name of laser maker Coherent, Inc. after acquiring it in 2022. It makes optical materials, lasers and semiconductors, including vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and silicon carbide substrates. It also owns the Finisar optical business bought in 2019, which supplies optical components for data networks. Carl Johnson and James Hawkey founded the company in 1971, and it is headquartered in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania and listed on the NYSE as COHR.

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide.
