About Lightium

Lightium is a Swiss foundry for photonic integrated circuits, which are chips that guide and modulate light. It works with thin-film lithium niobate, a material whose optical properties allow very fast modulators for optical communication and sensing. Lightium makes these chips on 200 mm wafers and offers a process design kit, a set of design rules for customers, in several wavelength bands. Access is currently limited to a closed beta programme. The company is headquartered in Schlieren, near Zurich, Switzerland.

Lightium was founded in 2023 and is based in Schlieren, Switzerland. It is listed under Photonic Computing.

What Lightium works on

Photonic Computing

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.
