About Fastree3D

Fastree3D is a Swiss company building 3D vision systems based on SPAD sensors, which are image sensors sensitive enough to detect single photons of light. These are used in flash lidar, a type of depth sensing that lights a whole scene at once. Its stated applications include pedestrian protection for cars, accident prevention for forklift vehicles and human-robot collaboration in factories. The company is located at the EPFL Innovation Park in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Fastree3D was founded in 2014 and is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is listed under Photonic Computing, ASICs.

What Fastree3D works on

Photonic Computing

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.

ASICs

An ASIC, or application-specific integrated circuit, is a chip designed to do one job or a narrow set of jobs. Its circuits are fixed when the chip is made. A CPU can run any program; an ASIC does what it was designed for and nothing else.
