About Soitec
Soitec is a French materials company that makes engineered wafers, the thin discs on which chips are built. Its main product is silicon on insulator (SOI), in which a thin silicon layer sits on an insulating layer to reduce electrical leakage and interference, helping radio and low-power chips. It produces these with Smart Cut, a process developed with the research institute CEA-Leti that transfers a thin crystal layer from one wafer to another. Soitec was founded in 1992 near Grenoble, is based in Bernin and trades on Euronext Paris.

What Soitec works on
Custom Silicon
Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.
