About Akhetonics

Akhetonics is developing an all-optical processor, which it calls the Reasoning Processing Unit, that handles data as light throughout instead of converting it to electrical signals. It aims the chip at reasoning, verification and optimisation workloads. The company says it uses optical nonlinearities generated in photonic integrated circuits, and it describes a platform that covers digital, analog and quantum optical computing. Michael Kissner is co-founder and chief executive, and Leonardo Del Bino is co-founder and chief technology officer.

Akhetonics was founded in 2021 and is based in Berlin, Germany. It is listed under Quantum Computing, Photonic Computing. Reported funding is €6M seed (Nov 2024, Matterwave Ventures).

What Akhetonics works on

Quantum Computing

A quantum computer is a machine that uses the rules of quantum physics to process information. Its basic unit is the qubit. A classical bit is either 0 or 1. A qubit can be in a superposition, a state that combines both, and its measured result is probabilistic.

Photonic Computing

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.
