About Loongson
Loongson designs general-purpose processors for Chinese desktops, servers and embedded systems. Its older chips used the MIPS instruction set, the rulebook that defines what software a processor can run. Since 2020 it has used its own LoongArch architecture, which a licence holder disputed as too close to MIPS before an arbitration largely went Loongson's way. The company was established in Beijing in April 2010 as a venture between the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Computing Technology and the chip designer BLX IC Design.
Loongson was founded in 2010 and is based in Beijing, China. It is listed under Custom Silicon, ASICs, CPUs & RISC-V. Its shares trade as 688047.SS on SSE.

What Loongson works on
Custom Silicon
Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.
ASICs
An ASIC, or application-specific integrated circuit, is a chip designed to do one job or a narrow set of jobs. Its circuits are fixed when the chip is made. A CPU can run any program; an ASIC does what it was designed for and nothing else.
CPUs & RISC-V
A CPU, or central processing unit, is the general-purpose chip that runs a computer. It reads instructions, does arithmetic and logic, and decides what happens next. Every phone, laptop and server has at least one.
