About Phytium Technology

Phytium designs Arm-based processors under the FeiTeng brand, covering server CPUs for data centres, desktop chips and embedded parts. Arm is a licensed instruction set, so Phytium builds its own cores that run Arm software rather than copying a ready-made design. The company is based in Tianjin. The US Commerce Department added Tianjin Phytium Information Technology to its Entity List in April 2021, citing support for Chinese military supercomputing, which limits its access to American technology. Its recent server chips include the 64-core Tengyun S2500.

Phytium Technology was founded in 2014 and is based in Tianjin, China. It is listed under Custom Silicon, ASICs, CPUs & RISC-V.

What Phytium Technology works on

Custom Silicon

Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.

ASICs

An ASIC, or application-specific integrated circuit, is a chip designed to do one job or a narrow set of jobs. Its circuits are fixed when the chip is made. A CPU can run any program; an ASIC does what it was designed for and nothing else.

CPUs & RISC-V

A CPU, or central processing unit, is the general-purpose chip that runs a computer. It reads instructions, does arithmetic and logic, and decides what happens next. Every phone, laptop and server has at least one.
