About Sunway

Sunway is a family of Chinese processors, not a standalone company, used in supercomputers built by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology and run at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi. The SW26010 chip has 256 small compute cores plus four management cores, a many-core design that favours raw parallel throughput over single-thread speed. It powers the Sunway TaihuLight system, which uses 40,960 of them. The processors were developed by the Jiangnan Computing Lab in Wuxi, mainly for Chinese government and military use.

Sunway was founded in 2006 and is based in Wuxi, China. It is listed under Custom Silicon, ASICs, HPC & AI Systems, CPUs & RISC-V.

What Sunway works on

Custom Silicon

Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.

ASICs

An ASIC, or application-specific integrated circuit, is a chip designed to do one job or a narrow set of jobs. Its circuits are fixed when the chip is made. A CPU can run any program; an ASIC does what it was designed for and nothing else.

HPC & AI Systems

High-performance computing (HPC) means using very large clusters of processors working together to solve problems that one machine cannot handle in a reasonable time. These clusters are called supercomputers. They run weather models, physics simulations and, increasingly, AI training.
