About FADU

FADU is a fabless semiconductor company in Seoul that designs controllers for solid-state drives, the chips that manage flash memory, error correction and data flow inside an SSD. It targets data centers and has said its latest controller, called Sierra, supports PCIe 6.0, capacities up to 512TB and sequential speeds around 28GB/s. It has not named its hyperscaler customers, though reports in 2022 said SK Hynix drives for Meta would use FADU controllers. Sources differ on the founding year, giving 2015 or 2016, and the company is led by CEO Jihyo Lee.

FADU was founded in 2015 and is based in Seoul, South Korea. It is listed under ASICs, Memory & Storage. Reported funding is $1B valuation.

What FADU works on

ASICs

An ASIC, or application-specific integrated circuit, is a chip designed to do one job or a narrow set of jobs. Its circuits are fixed when the chip is made. A CPU can run any program; an ASIC does what it was designed for and nothing else.

Memory & Storage

Memory and storage hold the data that processors work on. Memory such as DRAM is fast and loses its contents when power is removed. Storage such as flash (NAND) is slower, cheaper per bit and keeps data without power.
