About CamGraPhIC

CamGraPhIC develops optical transceivers, the modules that turn electrical signals into light so data can travel between chips and servers. Its design uses graphene, a one-atom-thick carbon layer, as the light-handling material in place of the silicon and indium phosphide parts used in most pluggable transceivers. The company says this can cut energy use and raise bandwidth for AI and high-performance computing links. It was founded in 2018 by Andrea Ferrari and Marco Romagnoli, began as a Cambridge spinout, and is based in Pisa, Italy as a subsidiary of 2D Photonics.

CamGraPhIC was founded in 2018 and is based in Pisa, Italy. It is listed under Photonic Computing, Custom Silicon. Reported funding is €211M EU/Italy DeepTech grant (Apr 2026) on top of €25M Series A (Feb 2025).

What CamGraPhIC works on

Photonic Computing

Photonic computing uses light instead of electricity to carry or process information. Photons have no charge, so light in a waveguide does not cause the resistive heating that current in a wire does, though lasers and modulators still use power, and many wavelengths can share one waveguide. The industry has two quite different parts: moving data with light, and computing with light.

Custom Silicon

Custom silicon means a company designs its own chips for its own products or data centers instead of buying standard parts. The chip is made by a foundry such as TSMC, but the design belongs to the customer.
